Leonid was able to pick up on the taint of strange magic. It was nothing familiar to anyone this side of the Great Western Sea but any spellcaster worth his salt could sense that it was bad news. All magic had a character, an aura. Some auras were inherent to the type of magic (like the aura of fire or water magic, elements had a distinctive "fingerprint" for lack of a better word) while others were dependent on the use (blood magic could leave behind an aura of corruption or an aura of healing depending on its use). The aura that pervaded every nook and cranny of the Captain's cabin, which resembled more a rat den writ large than any sort of human domicile, was rotten. It stank of pestilence and death and....rat.
Everything that could have been picked up and gnawed into tiny pieces had been put through exactly that treatment. The pile of rubbish reached halfway up the far wall, obscuring the porthole that provided light. What little that managed to claw its way inside was given a baleful and hollow feel. Smelly cucumber size pellets of rat dung littered the ground and rancid puddles of urine dotted the floor.
Dark congealed blood had dried and hardened on the floor right in front of the door. Bits and pieces of bone, thoroughly gnawed by rodent incisors, were scattered about. Someone had died here for certain. Bloody paw marks crisscrossed the floor.
[Options: Examine the paw marks, examine the nest, examine the porthole)
